About Manatee County, Florida

Manatee County was named after the gentle sea cow, "Manatee", which was seen frequently in the area's waterways. Manatee County features 150 miles of pristine shoreline boasting some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Location: Central-west Florida bordering the Gulf of Mexico and Hillsborough, Hardee DeSoto and Sarasota Counties
 
Population: 264,002 (Census 2000)

Area: 892.75 Square Miles

Land Area: 741.03 Square Miles

Water Area: 151.72 Square Miles

County Seat: Bradenton

History: Manatee County was established in 1855 from portions of Hillsborough and Mosquito counties. The county was named after the manatee (sea cow) seen frequently in its waters. According to some accounts, Hernando de Soto landed on Terra Ceia Island and began his trek north from present-day Manatee County.
