| Shelling is one of the favorite pastimes of Florida beachgoers. Serious sheller's comb the beaches around low tide to find the best shells. And if you can go out after a storm, you have a better chance of finding shells as well. When searching for shells, be sure that there is no live creature inside. It is prohibited in many places to take live specimens from the beach and if you are not sure what the rules are on the beach you are shelling on, it is best to leave the live ones behind. But you can still enjoy observing them! |

The best beaches for shelling are in the Gulf Coast Beaches of Sanibel-Captiva, and the barrier islands of Fort Myers. But don't think that you cannot find great shells on other beaches. We have found great shells on St. Pete Beach, St. George Island, Melbourne Beach, just to mention a few (we haven't been to all of them yet!) Keep in mind that sometimes you may find a lot of shells at a particular beach and other times you may not find anything but broken pieces.
Another great beach for finding treasures is Venice. But the treasures there are not necessarily the shells, but the sharks teeth!
