Everglades National Park
Spanning the southern tip of the
Florida peninsula and most of Florida Bay, Everglades National Park is
the only subtropical preserve in North America. Over 1.5 million acres
in size, it includes sawgrass prairies, mangrove and cypress swamps,
pinelands, and hardwood hammocks, as well as marine and estuarine
environments. Activities include biking, hiking, fishing, boating,
nature walks and bird watching. It is the only place where alligators
and crocodiles live together.
Biscayne National Park
Located off Homestead south of
Key Biscayne, 95% of the parks 173,000 acres is under water and requires
a boat to access anything beyond the shoreline. Activities include glass
bottom boat tours, snorkeling, scuba diving, boating, fishing and
wildlife watching.
Dry Tortugas National Park
A cluster of 7 islands approximately 70
miles west of Key West. The park surrounds Fort Jefferson and is
composed of coral reefs and sand, called the Dry Tortugas. Birds and
marine life is abundant. The area is famous for its legends of pirates
and sunken gold since the days of Spanish exploration, the reefs and
shoals have been a hazard and the site of hundreds of shipwrecks.
Recreational activities include swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving
among the reefs. Boating, fishing, camping and bird watching are also
popular activities.
