South Carolina Sea Turtles 

Recently, I was contacted by someone whose life dream was to observe (and
perhaps, volunteer with) the nesting and hatching processes of Sea Turtles in South Carolina. Julie Holling of the SC Dept. of Natural Resources was kind enough to forward my request for information on to several Sea Turtle nesting Programs throughout the state. Thanks to Julie, Mary Ellen Rogers, and Mike Walker (interpretive ranger at Hunting Island State Park) for passing along information which I hope is useful.---Debbie Lennon.

• Hunting Island State Park - 2555 Sea Island Parkway, Hunting Island, SC 29920. (843)838-2011
  "Offers turtle walks several nights a week during June and July. Generally,
  2 walks per evening with start times of 10 pm, 12 am or 2 am depending on
  tides. Walks last about 2 hours. There is also an evening hatchery watch
  every evening during August where participants may have the chance to see
  hatchlings emerge from their nests or observe a nest inventory being conducted."---Mike Walker. 
• "Sullivan's Island, Isle of Palms and Dewees Island use volunteers to walk
  the beach at sunrise in search of tracks indicating that a nesting mother came ashore the previous night. All of the beaches welcome volunteers. Contact Folly Island Sea Turtles for an overview."---Mary Ellen Rogers
• Cape Island, in Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge. Hosts largest nesting
  population of loggerheads outside of Florida. Cape Island uses volunteers
  to relocate nests on a beach that be accessed only by boat. Participation
  is demanding. Contact Larry Davis at the SeWee Visitors Center in Awendaw for details.
