Hair Care for the Florida Heat

It’s summer, which means ‘sun's out, buns out!’ Space buns, to be exact. We native Floridians are quite familiar with the gummy humidity that comes with the southern heat. Everyone has a hair type and texture specific to them. So it would only make sense that different products could work on an individuals hair type and texture. As a young African American women with type 4c hair, I need to spend at least 30 dollars every other month on specific anti-frizz hair products. I’m always on the hunt for affordable products that will moisturize, detangle, and tame my thick hair.

Hair type is whether you have straight hair, curly hair and anything in between. Hair texture is where your hair is fine, medium, or thick. In each type, there are subcatagories A, B and C, which identifies the range of the texture of hair. From ultra-fine to coarse and curly, all hair types are prone to poofing up at a certain stage. Here are a few products that are great for your scalp's battle with the Florida sun no matter what kind of hair you have.

Type 1 Hair: Biosilk (available at Target for $23.99)

Type 1a hair is straight, fine hair. It can easily get oily and shiny since there is a lack of curls. This means that the oil from the scalp goes all the way down the hair shaft faster than in those with curly hair like type 3 or 4. For those with fair to thick straight hair, no worries. We understand that fly always and frizz are still major issues. Type 1b colleague of mine swears by all Biosilk products. Especially the Biosilk Therapy Trio which comes with sulfate free shampoo, split end sealing conditioner, and lightweight leave-in formula. And the best part? Biosilk actually makes your hair feel like silk, hence the name.

Type 2 Hair: Kerastase Nutritive Oleo-Relax Serum (available on Amazon for $27.99)

I like to call this hair type the “combination,” because it is between being straight and curly. Type 2 hair has a wavy, often medium texture, but can be thin or extremely thick. Kerastase Nutritive Oleo-Relax Serum tames wavy hair, as well as hair prone to frizz. The product offers the perfect finishing touch for hair styling, providing a long-lasting wear before wash. In addition to keeping hair sleek and shiny, it locks in the waves and fly away curls.

Type 3 hair:  John Frieda Frizz Ease (available at Target for $9.99)

Type 3 is curly hair. It can become somewhat straight when wet or holding a lot of product, but it consitst of loose to tight curls in its natural state. One of my Cuban friends uses John Frieda products in her daily routine to protect her thick, loose curls. John Frieda Frizz Ease blocks frizz and transforms coarse, wiry, unruly frizz for a sleek, purely polished results. The product has a high-potency blend of silicone's infused with algae extract and silk protein. It leaves dry hair easy to manage and healthy-looking and it repels humidity to help prevent this Florida-related frizz.

Type 4 hair: Herstyler Argan Oil Hair Serum. (available at Amazon starting for $11.99)

To all my beautifully thick haired brothers and sisters, Herstyler Argan Oil Hair Serum is your most affordable option with a healthy moisturizing formula. Type 4 hair is consisted of tight, thick curls and can be a handful to manage in its natural state. The serum is great for all hair types and scalps, braids included, holds stubborn frizz under control and eliminates flyaways. Its formula also includes argan oil, vitamin E and aloe Vera. The best part? It moisturizes your curls while being lightweight and doesn’t leave any greasy residue.
