EPCOT stands for Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow and is roughly double the size of Magic Kingdom and opened October 1, 1982. The idea stemmed from Walt’s vision for an organized community of around 20,000 that would be in constant innovation and on the forefront of the nation’s technology. Walt said, “It will be a community of tomorrow that will never be completed, but will always be introducing, and testing, and demonstrating new materials and new systems.” This utopian idea for a developed community was eventually used for Celebration, which is a census designated place developed by The Walt Disney Company. The EPCOT park is somewhat of a continuous World’s Fair. Original designers were conflicted over whether to showcase a myriad of world cultures and celebrations, or to showcase cutting edge technology. They merged the two together, so EPCOT is home to the World Showcase (an long and immersive walk through several nations’ cultures) and Future World (a place showcasing constant innovation and technology).
