Florida Cosmetic Procedures & Surgery

Looking for a surgeon for Plastic Surgery or Cosmetic Surgery in Florida, start with our FloridaSmart Health & Medical Guide to Plastic Surgery. While Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery terms are often used interchangeably and they all deal with improving a patient's body, the philosophies, education and patient goals are different.

Plastic Surgery, also known as Aesthetic or Reconstructive Surgery, is focused on reconstruction due to birth defects, trauma, disease, etc. Cosmetic Surgery is focused on enhancing appearance and are typically elective procedures. While a Plastic Surgeon can be a cosmetic surgeon, a cosmetic surgeon may not be a plastic surgeon. Cosmetic Surgeons certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS) are only required to go through one year of additional training post-med school and has no formal residency requirements. Plastic Surgeons, on the other hand, are required to complete a minimum of six years in residency to be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). Reconstructive plastic surgery may be covered under insurance, whereas cosmetic plastic surgery is elective and usually not covered.
