Franklin County

Franklin County is located in Northwest Florida in the Panhandle bordering the Gulf of Mexico and Liberty, Wakulla and Gulf Counties. 

Franklin County was established from a portion of Escambia County in 1832 and named for Benjamin Franklin. Spanish explorer Panfilo de Narvaez visited the area near present-day Apalachicola in 1527. In 1845, Dr. John Gorrie of Apalachicola built the first ice-making machine.

Bald Point State Park is a 4,065 acre chunk of wildlife hanging off of the western end of the Florida panhandle right on the Golf of Mexico. The park is perfect for nature goers and birdwatchers with much of Florida's intricate habitats to explore. Not too mention the amazing wildlife on display including bald eagles in the fall, among other Florida birds migrating south for the winter. The parks beaches are also great for canoeing, kayaking, swimming, or simply relaxing near the ocean water. 

Franklin County School District’s mission is to provide a teaching, learning and caring environment for children where they can benefit from commitment to academic excellence. All students K-12 attend Franklin County School, except those students attending the Apalachicola Bay Charter School or other private schools.

The Dixie Theater celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2013. It has been both a movie theater and a performing arts venue throughout its long history. In reopened after renovations in 1998 and has since served as a performance space and a rental space for private parties during the off-season.

Franklin County is a great member of the gulf coast counties that line the panhandle of Florida. Here the beach is a great draw, with lots of ways to camp along the shoreline. The Wilderness Coast Public Library System has four branches in Franklin County, Jefferson County, and Wakulla County. They are in Eastpoint, Carrabelle, Monticello, and Crawfordville.
