City of Fort Pierce, Florida

The ecology of this area is extremely important. The Experimental Oculina Research Reserve protects the nearby Oculina Banks, a reef of ivory bush coral off the coast of Fort Pierce. In 1984, nearly 100 square-nautical-miles of the reef was designated the "Oculina Habitat Area of Particular Concern". It shares its history with several other Florida forts, dating back to the Second Seminole War.
