Baseline Road Trailhead

panorama of playground and picnic benches

Just outside of downtown Ocala, Baseline Road Trailhead offers a quick escape for a fun-filled afternoon. Near the parking lot, there's a playground, bathrooms, water fountains, and grassy areas. However, there's only shade further back on the trails, so make sure to bring your sunscreen, hats, and reusable water bottles.

As a part of the Cross Florida Greenway, a system with thousands of acres of pathways, this trailhead backs up to the Ocala National Forest. Offering two options, you can embark on a paved or unpaved trail at this state park. The paved trail is 5 miles and neighbors farmland along the way (very wheel-chair friendly). Meanwhile, the unpaved trail is a National Scenic Trail of nearly 3 miles and cuts through the Marshall Swamp. Watch out for wildlife! You may encounter:

  • Snakes
  • Deer
  • Gopher tortoises
  • Black bears
  • Various birds

You may have visited this trailhead for an event before. Often, school meets or charity runs are held at the Baseline Road Trailhead. If you haven't been yet and you're looking for a new hiking, running, or biking trail, this might be the place for you. Last but not least, don't overlook the free disc golf course in the back. It's a well-maintained course and just a general fun activity for the whole family!
