For over 3 decades, Hemingway's has been an Orlando staple, bringing deliciously fresh seafood and perfectly cooked steak to the center of the state. It first opened with the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress in 1984 and has since become a must-visit for any seafood lover. One of our editors had the chance to talk to Executive Chef David Didzunas, who gave us more insight into what makes Hemingway's great.
Hemingway's is more than just a name, the restaurant takes lots of inspiration from Ernest Hemingway's life. Particularly his travels from “Cayo Hueso” to the coast of Cuba, which he himself used as inspiration for many of his writings. Hemingway's has created a menu inspired by the food and culture of these areas. Special events celebrate Ernest Hemingway's life, including "Savoring the life of Ernest Hemingway", a recent event that celebrated his birthday and the 'San Fermin Festival' in Spain - 'the running of the bulls' - which he loved. Fitting, considering Ernest Hemingway spent many of his years living in Florida. Come to Hemingway's for a chance to experience a taste of the prolific writer's favorite places and foods.
If there's something that sets Hemingway's apart from other local seafood restaurants, it's the use of the best possible ingredients. Here you can enjoy seafood and steak at its freshest and most simple. Some dishes are seasonal, but for the most part the menu doesn't change to fit the latest trends. It is classic, simple dishes that don't need a modern update to make them delicious. For the best examples of this, try the crab cakes, which are about 98% crab meat. Or try the fried calamari, which Executive Chef David Didzunas says is one of the restaurant's most popular dishes.
An Oasis in the City
Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress is located right in the center of the action in Lake Buena Vista. Here, it can be hard to capture the beauty of the natural Florida landscape. But Hemingway's gives you ambiance and tranquility hard to find anywhere in the surrounding area. The hotel sits on its own private landscaped grounds on a lake. Anyone can come to eat at Hemingway's to get away from the city without ever actually leaving. The quiet, tranquil, coastal environment is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the delicious food.
