Monticello Bike Fest
This ode to the two wheeled conveyance, known informally as the bicycle, is a series of pro/am bike rides throughout Jefferson County. The contest is a CAAM Tour Series event, so regular riders will get to ride alongside some of the best bikers in the region. Rides range from 10 miles, to 30, 60, and the longest stretching to 100 miles. Monticello Bike Fest takes place in spring, so shake off that winter slumber at this great cycling event.
Sport and Other Activities
Kids and adults alike will find plenty of options for physical activity in Jefferson County. Martial arts classes from beginner level to advanced are taught. Nerf wars are a fun activity for kids to participate in while playing with their friends. Gymnastics, cheer, movies in the park, kids cooking classes, athletics & leagues, bus trips, and square dancing are some of the surprising activities to be found. Sports are also a big deal, so leagues for basketball, volleyball, and SNAG golf are available for participation.
Jefferson County Fair and BBQ Cookoff
Food contests abound along with a large variety of entertainment options. The event, along with providing some tasty grub, is designed to honor the culinary traditions of Florida. The BBQ contest itself is a challenge for cooks to make a dish of chicken, ribs, and pork butt and be judged on presentation, tenderness, and taste. Other contests will be hosted, including ones for pumpkin pie, fruit pie, pound cake, and a pumpkin carving contest. For children, a greased pig chase will be held, along with hay rides.
The natural beauty of the old south is glimpsed through the hanging mosses which hang above passerby who walk the heritage roads of Jefferson County. The paved Miccosukee-Magnolia Trail, Plantation Trail, Spanish Trace Trail, and Flatwoods-Wilderness Trail form the heritage roads themselves. Walking or riding along these trails bring visitors back to the rustic history of Florida, when timber, ranching, and agriculture were king. Step on these roads and step back in time to a slower and enriching time for North Florida.
Jefferson is as unique as they come. Celebrate the history of the area while biking your heart out, keeping your step in a square dance, practicing your layups, and making sure to stop for some great BBQ to recharge.
