The Key West Shipwreck Treasure Museum celebrates the era of the wreckers in Key West, a time in the 1800s when people made a living salvaging shipwrecks. During this time hundreds of ships were coming through Key West and there was about one wreck every week. Wreckers would wait to spot a wreck and race to be the first one to arrive at the wreck, and the one to take control of the spoils. Many people struck it rich in this career and helped make Key West the richest city in America. The museum displays the kinds of treasures wreckers might have found during that time and invites visitors to experience life as a wrecker.
