Miami-Dade County is located in Southeast Florida bordering the Atlantic Ocean and Monroe, Broward and Collier Counties.
Established in 1836 from a portion of St. Johns County and originally named “Dade” County named for Major Francis Longhorne Dade, U.S. Army Commander during the Second Seminole War. The name was changed in 1997 by the voters from Dade to Miami-Dade add the internationally recognized city of Miami.
