There’s something special about Polk County. It is a mix of small-town charm, rich history, and big-city energy, all wrapped up in one incredible community. And if there’s one thing we know how to do here in the Lakeland metro area, it’s throw a great event. From annual food festivals to vibrant art shows, music concerts, and holiday celebrations, there’s always something happening that brings people together.

As a local, I’ve grown up attending some of these signature events, and each one has its own unique vibe. Whether you’re a longtime resident or just visiting, here’s an inside look at the best festivals and events in Polk County!

February: Polk County’s Art & Culture Come Alive

February is when Polk County starts to wake up from winter (as much as Florida even has one). The cool air makes it the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors, and what better way than with art, music, and food?

  • Lakeland PigFest – If you love BBQ, live music, and cold beer, this is your scene. Held at Sun ‘n Fun, this event brings in some of the best pitmasters in the country. The smell of slow-cooked ribs fills the air, and locals come out in droves to eat and compete.
  • Art Crawl Lakeland – Picture Munn Park transformed into an open-air art gallery. Local and regional artists showcase everything from paintings to sculptures, and it’s a great place to grab a unique piece for your home.

There’s nothing quite like strolling through downtown Lakeland, BBQ in one hand, a local craft beer in the other, surrounded by the hum of live music. It’s Polk County at its finest.

March & April: Spring Brings Festivals to Life

Springtime in Polk County is stunning—perfect weather, blooming flowers, and the return of some of my favorite events.

  • Florida Strawberry Festival (Plant City) – Okay, it’s technically outside Polk County, but let’s be real—everyone from here goes! Think giant strawberry shortcakes, carnival rides, and big-name country music stars.
  • Chain of Lakes Festival (spring): A celebration of the lakes and local culture, with live music, food vendors, and boating activities.
  • Sun ‘n Fun Aerospace Expo (Lakeland) – This is one of the biggest aviation events in the world. You don’t even have to be an aviation buff to enjoy it—the airshows, night flights, and military jets are jaw-dropping. Locals know to grab a spot near Lake Parker to watch planes fly in.

There’s nothing like a Florida sunset with the sound of fighter jets soaring overhead at Sun ‘n Fun. It’s a reminder that Lakeland is home to aviation history, and this event puts us on the global map.

May – August: Summer Vibes & Music Festivals

Summers in Polk County are hot and humid, but we know how to make the most of it!

  • Music on the Promenade (Lakeland) – Free live music at Hollis Garden, right by Lake Mirror. Bring a blanket, some snacks, and enjoy the sunset while local bands play everything from blues to jazz.
  • Juneteenth Celebrations (Bartow & Winter Haven) – These events celebrate Black history, culture, and music with parades, live performances, and food vendors.
  • Red, White & Kaboom (Lakeland) & Thunder on the Ridge (Haines City) – Fireworks light up Lake Mirror and Lake Eva for 4th of July celebrations, and trust me, they’re incredible!

Grab an ice-cold drink, sit by the lake, and listen to live music as fireworks explode overhead.

September – November: Fall Festivities & Foodie Fun

Once the summer heat fades, Polk County comes alive with fall events and festivals.

  • Lakeland Oktoberfest – Beer, bratwurst, and Bavarian-style fun at Munn Park.
  • Winter Haven Craft Beer Festival – Local breweries, food trucks, and live music make this a must for beer lovers.
  • Lake Wales Pioneer Days – Step back in time with historical reenactments, pioneer crafts, and storytelling.

For food lovers, the Fall Festival season is pure magic. Every weekend, there’s a different food truck rally, wine tasting, or street fair to check out.

December: The Holiday Spirit Takes Over

December in Polk County is magical. The whole area gets decked out in twinkling lights, and there are Christmas parades, holiday markets, and festive events everywhere you turn.

  • Lakeland Christmas Parade – Picture dozens of floats, marching bands, and Santa Claus himself making their way through downtown Lakeland. Families set up chairs early to get the best view.
  • Winter Haven Holiday Boat Parade (December): A beloved tradition where locals decorate their boats with holiday lights and cruise the lakes.
  • Christmas at Bok Tower Gardens – If you’ve never seen Bok Tower lit up for the holidays, you’re missing out. It’s peaceful, festive, and absolutely breathtaking.
  • Snowfest (Lakeland) – Yes, you read that right. Snow in Florida! The city brings in real snow so kids can sled and play.

One of my favorite traditions is grabbing a cup of hot cocoa, walking around Munn Park to see the Christmas lights, and stopping by local shops for gifts. It’s the kind of small-town holiday magic you just don’t find everywhere.

Monthly Events

  • Cypress Gardens Water Ski Show is an ongoing free, family-friendly event featuring world-class water skiing performances.
  • Downtown Winter Haven Food Truck Rally: A monthly event featuring food trucks, music, and entertainment.
