Beaches & Activities Along the Sarasota Coastline

Sarasota Florida Area Beaches

This guide starts at Longboat Key and goes through Lido Key and Siesta Key. Venice beaches are also in Sarasota County, but have their own Beach Guide here.

Longboat Key

Longboat Key is a barrier island that stretches across both Manatee and Sarasota counties and while the north half of the barrier island is in Manatee County, we include it in the Sarasota area beaches.

Longboat Key, often hailed as a haven of tranquility, boasts miles of pristine coastline and luxurious waterfront properties.  Here, the pace of life slows down, inviting visitors to unwind and immerse themselves in the serenity of the surroundings.

The beaches are renowned for their uncrowded expanses of soft, white sand and crystal-clear waters. This may be due to the fact that Longboat Key has very little public access to the beautiful stretch of beachfront. We found 3 spots to gain access to the beach. The north end sits just across the inlet from Anna Maria Island. Beautiful sand and picturesque spots in a less crowded (because it is harder to access) beach.

Bayfront Park is the best access point for the public with a park across the street on the bay side. This quiet beach is serene and offers a nice spot to relax.

To the south, there is a few off the street parking spots that are very limited. If you can find a spot, this beach offers a lovely coastline view in a relaxed, though somewhat less welcoming, environment.

Lido Key Beaches

As you cross over the bridge from Longboat Key onto Lido Key, it becomes a whole new world. Lido Key features a 2.5 mile long shoreline that offers gloriously soft white powder sand and gorgeous beachfront. It is connected to the famous St. Armands Circle. Created as a centerpiece for John Ringling’s ideal resort community, St. Armands Circle is a luxury shopping and dining destination built in a circle around a park in the center.

At the north end of Lido Key is North Lido Beach, with a small parking area to access the beach. There are no facilities here and parking is limited. This beach is known for its natural beauty and is a great place for nature walks and enjoying the coastal landscape.

Lido Beach is the main beach and is directly off of the circle and has lots of parking running all along the beach road. There are facilities in the middle and more parking to offset any extra needs.

At the south end of Lido Key is South Lido Park Beach. This 100-acre park offers parking directly between the bayside and the beachside so you can enjoy the best of both shorelines.

Siesta Key & South

Siesta Beach

It’s 99 percent pure-quartz sand – perhaps the finest and whitest you’ll ever see – earned Siesta Key’s, Siesta Beach a No. 1 rating on Dr. Beach and TripAdvisor.

There are several access points on the north end of Siesta Key but very little parking. Most are pedestrian only.

Siesta Key Public Beach is the main beachfront and is a very active beach with lots of parking, facilities and activities. Note that even with lots of parking, this beach is the one people travel to visit and can get crowded and full. The road getting to this beach often is backed up for miles and can make your trip to the beach 30-60 minutes longer. So get your google map and check the route during the time of day you are heading there.

Once you get there, you will see why this beach wins awards and is often at the top of the best beaches list. With the gloriously soft crystal sand, wide expansive beachfront, activities for all ages, shallow waters along the shoreline, fun shelling opportunities, and just an overall perfect family atmosphere, Siesta Key is hard to beat!

Crescent Beach

Crescent Beach was named for the shape of the shoreline with the curve that defines the area. Known for the Point of Rocks at the south end of Crescent Beach. This spot features limestone rock with tidepools on the shoreline. Take your snorkeling gear and get in the water here. It is an amazing spot that is less common along the Florida coastline.

It is at this point where the vibe, sand and well, everything changes. The sands start to get shellier, less powdery and darker in color. The beachfront changes from a wide open expanse to a narrow shoreline. The community is less industrial and more quiet and peaceful. This is where Turtle Beach begins and where we start our Venice Beach Area Dark Sand Beaches Guide.
