City of Belle Glade, Florida

Belle Glade and its surrounding area is occasionally referred to as Muck City because of the swampy area where sugarcane grows. Almost half of the nation’s sugarcane comes from this area and its neighbors. Many migrant farmworkers from Belle Glade appeared in the 1960 television documentary, Harvest of Shame. The community is also known for its football tradition, and combined with its neighbor, Pahokee, has sent at least 60 players to the National Football League.
