Opa-Locka was founded by an aviation pioneer named Glenn Curtiss. He based the town off of One Thousand and One Nights, a collection of stories from the Middle East and South Asia. He named many of the streets after characters from the stories and built all buildings in the Moorish Revival Style. Opa-Locka now has more Moorish Revival architecture than any city in the western hemisphere. 20 of those buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places. Opa-Locka was also the first city in the country to name a street after President Barack Obama.
