City of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida

A wealthy landowner named John D. MacArthur transformed what was originally cattle ranches, pine forests and swampland into 4,000 acres of homes in what he called “a garden city.” To showcase his accomplishment in 1970, he purchased an 80 year old banyan tree that had to be moved over a railway. It cost $30,000 and 1,008 hours of manpower to move it. It also knocked out the Western Union telephone and telegraph lines that were adjacent to the tracks, cutting off communication between Miami (80 miles south) and the rest of the world.
