The city made national news in 1998 when a second round of fires forced the entirety of Flagler County to evacuate. 45,000 people were displaced from their homes and fire suppression organizations from 44 states responded to the call for help. Together, the conducted the largest aerial suppression ever conducted in the United States. Because of the national effort, only 71 homes were damaged. Because of this noteworthy event in their history, one of the city’s main focuses is the preservation and protection of their sensitive lands as it heads into the future.
