In the 1950s, this small area was composed of a fishing camp, a few farms, and a couple of businesses. By February of 1961, there were over 250 homes, and by 2006, they were making room for 18,000 residencies. Tradition and Core Communities welcomed the Florida Center of Innovation in 2008. This research laboratory and campus had a building for two biotech and life science companies, the Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies and the Vaccine & Gene Therapy Institute. The campus alone brought an estimated 30,000 jobs to the city.
