Town of Shalimar, Florida

Originally called Port Dixie, this is a small town known as “the town that sprang up out of the woods.”  The incorporation in 1947 was directly linked to state law that prohibited clubs in unincorporated areas from staying open from 12:00am on Saturdays until Monday mornings, which would negatively impact the gambling operations at the casino of the Shalimar Club, the social hub of the community. Many Indians used to live in this area, so some nights on full moons, it’s said that their shadows appear in the fog over the swampy land.
