The city is often referred to by locals as St. Pete, and neighboring St. Pete Beach residents voted to formally abbreviate its name in 1994. The share St. Pete Beach’s average of some 361 days of sunshine each year, but St. Petersburg holds the Guinness World Record for logging the most consecutive days of sunshine (768 days). It is nicknamed "The Sunshine City" and is a popular retirement destination in addition to its draw to general vacationers.

Jannus Live is a small music venue that is located in St. Petersburg. Since opening in 1984, there have been countless live music performances in a building that holds just 2,000 concert goers. What started out as originally local musicians only eventually expanded into hosting both local artists and bigger artists when the Red Hot Chili Peppers played there for the first time in 1987. Although they like to stick to the local artists, bigger names do come through here on occasion. The outdoor music venue was refurbished in 2009 but it continues to bring in many musicians and music lovers.

The University Of South Florida St. Petersburg (USFSP) is an extension of The University of South Florida. There are over 30 bachelor's degree programs and 15 master's programs offered at USFSP. USFSP also offers great ways to get involved on campus and in the community.
