City of Starke, Florida

The location that is now Starke, was still unnamed and only occupied by timber workers. A land speculator and developer named George W. Cole was drawn here by the prospects of growth following the arrival of the railroad. He obtained a title to a 40-acre tract on both sides of the railroad for a just $100. One legend has it that the post office was given the name of Starke in honor of Mr. Cole's financier, whose family name was Starke.
