Steinhatchee, Florida

Brevet General Zachary Taylor built 35 forts throughout Middle Florida to assist in the "pacification of the territory." Fort Frank Brooke was built on the lower Steinhatchee River, the mouth of which was called Dead Man Bay. One of the area’s most significant achievements was during the Civil War when they derived salt from the seawater, and many salt works are still visible along the mud-flats and salt marshes.
