Vernon is a city in Washington County, Florida. The name Vernon actually stems from George Washington’s Virginia home, Mt. Vernon. Vernon started out as a quaint, pioneer town and the site of a major indian settlement. Today, it has evolved to a more diverse city. Vernon gained national recognition in 1981 when it was featured in the Errol Morris documentary film, Vernon, Florida. The documentary highlighted the eccentricities of the people who lived in Vernon. The area’s history can be observed at the Vernon Historical Society Museum.
