Florida is a popular habitat for both Land Turtles and Sea Turtles.
Sea Turtles nest on Florida’s beaches and can be found in the waterways around the coast. The species that are present in Florida include Leatherbacks, Loggerhead, Hawksbill and Green Turtle.
Sea Turtles are not the only water turtles in Florida. Freshwater Turtles are very common in lakes, ponds and rivers around Florida including snapping turtles, softshell turtles, cooters, and sliders.
The gopher tortoise and box turtles are land turtles that are easily identified by a high domed shell. Gopher tortoises are a threatened species that are protected in Florida by state law.
