History of Anna Maria Island & Bradenton Beach
The barrier island of Anna Maria, for 1,000s of years offered a bountiful ecosystem for Native Americans who were the first inhabitants until it was claimed by Spain in the 1500s, then acquired by the U.S. as part of Florida in 1819.
There are different theories of the naming of Anna Maria Island. Some records indicate that the island was named by the Spanish after Maria, mother of Christ and her mother, Anna. Others state that explorer Ponce De Leon, who is said to have landed on the island and named it in honor of Maria Anna, who was Queen to King Charles II of Spain at the time. And more recently, named by early settler Tampa mayor Madison Post who reportedly named the island after his wife Maria and sister-in-law Anna. It wasn’t until 1894 that the name Anna Maria Key was registered officially with federal records. Learn more at the Anna Maria Island Historical Society
