Florida has 80+ locations designated as a Flat or Prairie. The Pine Flatwoods, or Pinelands, in Florida are wooded areas that are on level land or porous limestone and is dominated by pine trees. Longleaf pine and slash pines dominate in most areas with underlying plants including saw palmettos, wildflowers and ferns.
Florida’s Prairies are mostly dominated by grassland and are similar to Flats minus the trees. Most of the prairies are termed “dry prairies” due to their geology being mostly dry, but in Florida, even the dry areas are web during the rainy season.
