The area was originally named Hunter’s Point but was changed when the post office was established in 1888.

The village’s historical significance is evident in its preserved architecture, including charming cottages and boatyards that offer glimpses into its seafaring past. Cortez is recognized as a historical landmark with over 90 buildings that are on the National Register of Historic Places.
