Brevard county is located on Florida's Space Coast, east/central Florida, bordering the Atlantic Ocean. Brevard County was established in 1844 from a portion of Mosquito County and was originally named St. Lucie. In 1855 the name was changed in honor of Theodore Washington Brevard (1804-77) of North Carolina. Brevard came to Florida in 1847 and became the state comptroller.
The Brevard Public School District is known as the 48th largest district in the United States and the 10th largest in Florida. Across 17 different municipalities in the Space Coast area, Brevard County Public Schools educate students in over 80 schools, 20 special centers and 10 charter schools.
